Education means drawing out the faculties. Men are born with some faculties, and these faculties are developed through the process of learning and cultivation. Swami Vivekananda has said that education means the manifestation of divinity already in man. Education thus the presupposes the subduing of the baser elements in man and developing of the possitive qualities. Wordsworth says in his Educatior
of Nature that Nature will be both law and impulse. The purpose of education therefore is to check the base instincts and to inspire the good elements in man. Education, therefore, is the best means of civilisation and culture. ln ancient time, and during the Renaissance in Europe, iberal education was popular. Education meant the study of literature, religion
and philosophy. The purpose of education was to inculcate human values and to develop the personality and character of man. In the modern period scientific or technical education has been all the rage. This is due to scientific and industrial progress. A modern nation lays emphasis on the growth of industries. So the nation requires a large number of engineers and technocrats. Study of scientific subjects, engineering,
medicine has become popular with the students. These subjects provide the knowledge of matter and develop the skill. They prepare young men and women for some professions. As a result, the study of literature and philosophy is considered useless. It has led to the erosion of values. Technical education can
develop skill and inelligence, but does not develop the emotions and promote the humanist outlook.
It is true that in the modern age, education should be employment- oriented. Every student must get a job after he leaves the college or university. Unemployed graduates are a burden on the society and are
the source of social unrest. Work education and technical education should be provided to all so that students can get gainful employment. There is a huge wastage of energy and resources because education to- day is not purposive. It is the first task of the education planners to make the education system responsive to the needs of the society. But at the same time the humanist ideal has to be emphasised. The proper education system should aim at the promotion of knowledge and skill and human values. Mere knowledge and skill would make a citizen uncultured intelligent worker. He would work with mechanical intelligence, but he will not have any intellectual interests and cultura taste. Such a man will not be a very helpful citizen. The true aim of education is to develop intellect and emotions, skill and human values, aptitude and taste, knowledge and culture. Education(AIM) that does not help in forming character fails in its essential aim. Purposive or vocational education does not mean the loss of human and cultural values that alone contribute to the development of character. It is through education
that a man has to be made. Corruptions, wantonness, murders and crimes run rampant in the society. Youngmen are addicted to all kinds of vices. ‘Thus they are not properly educated; their minds and hearts are not developed.
